Panorama Route: The Journey is the Destination

The panoramic route stretches for hundreds of kilometers and is crisscrossed by lush forests, rolling hills and historic geological formations. This iconic South African journey winds through the cliffs of eastern Pumalanga province, leading visitors to discover the wonders of paradise.

Departure: From the town of Leidenburg, take the R37. Turn onto the Long Tom Pass and follow the winding 150-kilometer journey. The panoramic route lives up to its name and offers amazing views from all angles.

SEEING: Explore the National Monument made up of the 65-meter-high twin waterfalls. McMack Falls are waterfall-style waterfalls, one of which is naturally formed and the other is caused by a mining explosion. Walk along the winding paths and witness this spectacle.

Continue on the R534 to experience one of South Africa’s most stunning landscapes. From the Window of God, you can see the seemingly endless landscape of primeval forests and rock formations.

Keep an eye out for the 30-meter-tall natural tower overlooking the terrain. Pinnacle rock is a quartzite geological formation that erupts from the earth. Surrounded by aloe vera and ferns, admire one of the most beautiful symbols of the region.

What to do: Follow the Long Tom Pass in search of the remains of the Second Boer War. A replica of the Long Tom Cannon is displayed for guests to learn about the history of South Africa.

Ditch your car and explore your surroundings along the exciting horseback riding trails of Coopers Creek. Cross the Sabi Plain and enjoy the vast expanse of land.

Take a 51-metre-high cable car and descend in an unusual way to Graskop Gorge. Follow the boardwalk through the African mountain forests, home to countless wildlife, including the small-striped sparrow, the spotted gene finch, and the black long-tailed monkey.

If you believe that adventure is about journeys rather than destinations, take the old path of the Panorama Route and encounter a harmonious and historically unexplored world.
